Thuggin Lovin

True Story: Me and my boys Whitey and V Mac were promoting for a party a while ago. So after the club let out we had a few flyers on us that we needed to get out. As Whitey and V Mac were out there hustling flyers they were at a crosswalk and some random chick approaches, so they give her the whole spill about the party and whatnot. Apparently the girl decides she doesn’t want to wait at the crosswalk anymore and walks out just as a car is passing by. Being the gentlemen that they are, V Mac and Whitey stop her from getting hit by the car. The girl then turns to them and instead of thanking them for saving her life, she says, “See this why I ain’t coming to yall party. Yall aint even HOOD enough!” I can’t make this shit up.

So this isn’t a new phenomenon or anything like that, but a recent news story about a young lady who was killed by her boyfriend that had a reputation of a thuggish nature prompted me to put my thoughts down about this subject. Apparently her family warned her about the dude, but she was persistent in standing by her man until the very end….literally. I personally never understood why, but women seem to like “thugs.” There’s a reason I put the word in quotes; because no woman really wants a real thug. They just want someone who dresses the part. If you ask a woman why she likes the thug type of a man, she’ll probably give you some bull shit answer about how she needs a real man that can handle a woman like her. See, they like the thug persona, but still expect the young man to open doors, be a gentleman, be able to hold intelligent conversations, and dress like an adult when he wants to (no, dressing like an adult does not include an eight-button Stacy Adams suit). You would probably expect an answer like this from a woman in high school or college, but unfortunately these are grown ass women coming up with these answers. True, perhaps while a young man is immature and portrays a "thuggish" appearance in high school or maybe even while an undergraduate in college, but is actually en route to becoming a productive adult, once the 25-30 year age limit has been reached, "thuggish" ways have pretty much set in. Upon deeper thinking and research, I think I’ve found the real reason why. Walk with me, people

The first reason I believe is because, as I’ve stated before, some women just love drama. They need it to breathe. For some, a man who works at Dell or State Farm just isn’t interesting enough. They need someone who is out there working on his music and is in the “trap.” This way when he makes it big, she can quit her job and spend all day shopping, and all night in the club popping bottles. Either way, the dude with the 9-5 is a little too square for her, and she’d probably become bored with him quickly. Apparently stability = boredom

The other reason goes a little deeper though. I truly believe some women have a false idea of what masculinity is; as if a dude that is hot tempered and overly aggressive proves his manhood because he won’t concede to anything. Because a real man don’t take no shit from nobody and goes out and handles his. Riiight...

Sadly these are the women who will have gotten played, heartbroken, burned, etc by these so called thugs, and they will be alone and miserable. They’ll get tired of the dude with no stability and will be looking to upgrade to one of the straight forward guys out there with a 401k. Eventually they will end up on an ABC special about why successful black women can’t find a successful black man. So to all my good guys out there, don’t sweat it. They say nice guys finish last, but at least they don't finish in prison or a coffin. If you’re trying to get at a chick and she claims to want a “thug” or that you're not hood enough, just let her go. Stop trying to save em…let them hoes get run over.

White Men STILL Can't Jump

Sometimes people do the most ignorant stuff without even realizing what they do is wrong. Like when an old white lady sees a black baby and says something like “Awww, she is so cute for a little black baby.” Some people, however, do ignorant things and know how inane it is, yet they try to make excuses for why whatever it is they’re doing isn’t wrong. Case in point: Don "Moose" Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA. Who is this guy, and what the hell is the AABA? I thought you might ask. The AABA is the All American Basketball Alliance that Lewis hopes will have its inaugural season this coming June. And the dream of Moose Lewis is that the league will be an all white league, also excluding anyone not born in the United States. Let the record show that I stand strong in my belief that European pansy players made the NBA soft with their flops and what not (see: Ginobili, Manu). Now there’s no hand checking, and everything is considered a flagrant foul these days, but that’s not the point. I’m all for being an entrepreneur, but trying to create an all white basketball league isn’t really original. Didn’t they try this once before back in the 40’s, but eventually they realized that black people have an extra bone/muscle, which is why we’re blessed with all the talent and athleticism. This extra bone/muscle gives us the ability to make the sport fun and exciting, and people will actually pay to watch us do so, thus making the league profitable.

But of course the guy came out quickly and said it has nothing to do with race. "There's nothing hatred about what we're doing. I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

Don’t they already have a league that doesn’t allow black men to play and the game revolves around fundamentals? I believe it’s called the WNBA, and we see how well they’re doing. I give them two or three more seasons before they fold. In a further effort to assure us that he has no hatred, Lewis then said he wants to focus on the fundamentals of the game and wanted to eliminate “street ball” played by “people of color.” Or as I read it: “Them niggers is too good.” He believes the white game of basketball is a fundamental game. No arguments here, except that the person that they call “The Big Fundamental” is Tim Duncan, a big black guy. Then again, he is married to a white woman so maybe he gets a pass. Lewis seems to think that this is the game of basketball that works the best. Well when we find a white guy as good as Michael Jordan or one that can run the court like LeBron, maybe I’ll give your reasoning some merit. But I don’t ever see that happening unless a white guy gets cosmetic surgery to insert an extra bone/muscle to make him more athletically inclined.

The last thing I want to mention before I finish is Lewis citing how in the Negro Basketball Association you have certain incidents where the audience is subjected to conduct that may leave them feeling a little unsafe. He went on to say, “Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands? That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction." This is very valid point because no white person in the history of America has EVER attacked innocent people by doing something crazy like….I don’t know, shooting up a random store or other place of business. Nah, that never happens.

Thanks, but no thanks

I was watching an episode of the show “The Game” the other day. You know the one where the white chick is teaching the other two light skinded ones how to pole dance for their respective mens’. Then I started seeing all these commercials for something called “Flirty Girl Fitness” or some variation of that where women who all wear a size 0 do some hip thrusts and a few weak ass lap dances on top of an empty chair and claim it can get you in shape and keep you fit. Yeah, probably if you’re already a size 0. Tell Mo’nique and Precious big asses to get up there, and if they lose a significant amount of weight, I’ll believe it; otherwise, I ain’t buying it. Come to find out there are thousands of women all across the country who take these pole dancing classes, claiming to do it so that they can spice things up in the bedroom and whatnot. Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll pass. It’s not that I have anything against getting a lap/pole dance from my lady, it’s just that there’s absolutely no reason for you to take these classes. Personally, I’m not much of a strip club kinda guy anyway, although I do enjoy the visuals . I’ll never be the one who says, “hey let’s hit the strip club” whenever I’m chilling with my boys trying to find something to do later that night. It just never made sense to me to go somewhere and pay a woman to dance for me, give me an erection, and leave me out to dry. And if I happen to be in a classy establishment such as Harlem Knights, where I can get some in exchange for an undisclosed amount, I’m a strong advocate against direct monetary transactions for sex. So at the end of the day it’s pointless to me. But if do happen to end up there anyway, I still notice that some of the moves that some of these skrippers are able to perform cannot be taught in one class that lasts an hour, and is taught by a 45 yr old ex-burlesque show girl. Some of these hoes are really talented. I mean, let’s be real about this people. One class? Do you really think that’s all you need to perform to the best of your ability? You can’t go to class for the first day of the semester and not show up again until finals and expect to pass. It doesn’t work that way. Another reason why this practice has no real benefit to anyone is because there’s nowhere to utilize the skills outside of a strip club. Who in the hell has a pole in their house/apartment? Seriously ladies, where exactly are you gonna perform some of these moves for your man? So if there are any ladies who are wasting time and money on these classes please stop. I’d much rather you buy me a pair of shoes or a watch than to see you bust your ass trying to climb a pole. Now if you can take a class that teaches you how to dance like one of them girls in the “Tip Drill” video, then that’s something we can discuss.

One last rant before I check out of here. Remember the scene in the movie “Old School” where they have all the wives learning how to give phenomenal fellatio (I made that one up)? Turns out these off the dome sessions exist as well. Now this is something that ladies can put to good use for their man, considering the fact that they don’t need a large metal prop to do so. But just like pole dancing, it’s a waste of time and/or money. Think about it; why would I want another woman teaching my girl how to give me head? Especially if I’m not around to be used in tutorials. I think I’d much rather teach her to do what I like on my own. Who knows what I like better than me, right? And she won’t have to worry if she doesn’t get it right the first time…we can keep practicing until she gets it right.

Is That Yo Chick Pt 2

Is that Yo Chick PT 2:

As a follow up to “Is that Yo Chick Pt.1”, we proudly introduce a Pt. 2 because you (the people) loved it so much with your comment,s and because there are other aspects to touch on. Now we already stated that if your partner wanted to cheat they were going to cheat and there is NOTHING you can do about it. So just to recap the first two components, which were the jealous guy/girl that hates when people look at their partner, and thinking that just because they are talking to a friend, that it must mean they are “blowing their back out” even though if they talking to someone out of my crew we most likely taught her that little thing that she does and that you like most. So let’s jump right into these next topics.

Another situation we notice happens often is when a girlfriend/boyfriend’s phone rings from a call or a text, a lot of people get all up in arms for no reason. If you think you are the only person in your partner’s contacts, then you are about as dumb as a sack of rocks. There are people before you and most likely will be some during and after you….so save yourself some stress and try not to screen someone else’s phone calls. Just think about it like this: if it’s someone he/she is cheating with he/she won’t even look at the phone let alone answer it in front of you. So just calm down before someone’s feelings get hurt. Some people you just can’t win with. Let’s say someone’s significant other does answer the phone in front of them to talk to a friend, be it male or female, they are talking to someone who is JUST A FRIEND. You have some people who get mad because they think their girl/guy is flirting with someone else in their face and is being disrespectful. On the other hand if the phone doesn’t get answered that person will still get mad because he/she feels that the significant other has something to hide. God forbid if your guy/girl caught you cheating before. Every time your phone rings all she’ll say is “It’s probably that BITCH calling you again!” 4406

Lastly, if a random person compliments your girl/boyfriend by saying something like “you look nice today” or “I like what you have on” it does not mean that they are trying to recruit your main squeeze into some kind of weird swingers union. No need to jump down a person’s throat (no lil kim). If someone tells you that your man/woman is handsome/beautiful, take solace in the fact that you have great taste and that you aren’t like some of these people walking around with somebody on your arm looking like they just got through watching the tape from The Ring. The same thing applies when ya’ll are standing in a checkout line and we stop and have a conversation with the clerk. That person is not flirting, that’s just good customer service. Or maybe they are. The salesperson could be looking to get some.

Is That Yo Chick?

Anybody out there known to be a jealous boyfriend/girlfriend? You probably won’t admit it and that’s ok. Does anybody have a jealous significant other? I don’t necessarily have a problem with people getting a little jealous when their boyfriend/girlfriend gets a little too close for comfort with someone else that isn’t him/her. It’s only natural. What I do have a problem with is people who are rediculously jealous as well as insecure in their relationship. People would be doing themselves a huge favor if they stopped stressing themselves out over what the other person is doing. I’m not saying you shouldn’t care what the other person is doing, I’m saying there isn’t anything you can do about what the other person is doing. To everyone out there in Facebookland and across the globe read this carefully: If your man/woman wants to cheat on you, there is absolutely NOTHING that you can do about it.
There are generally two situations that piss me off whenever I see them; rather it be on tv or in real life.

The first happens something like this when me and my boys decide to hit downtown. Why is it that whenever some guy sees us walking towards him and his girl he immediately looks at his girl, looks at us, and then graps his girl’s hand and moves to the other side of the walk way or to another part of the club? Stop handcuffing dude. Don’t get mad at one of us because your girl was peeping. And don’t try to act hard and front of your girl either, cuz I’m the only skinny one in my crew. Everybody else looks like they got their master’s degree from Gold’s Gym. We will whoop the shit outta you and take ya girl behing the alley of Speakeasy and have our way. I’m just playin…but I’m sayin. The point I’m trying to make is there is no reason for you to be mad. Not at me anyway. You’d be better off checking your girl and going upside her head. Besides, I’m not gonna holla at her…well not in front of you anyway. Now as soon as you go to the bathroom, I might step to her at the bar. But you’re in the bathroom and there ain’t a damn thing you can do about it. So stop with the insecurities. If something did happen with your girl and another dude, you won’t find out about it anyway. And worrying about what or who she does all day when you’re not around will eat you alive. You can’t watch her 24/7. And if you happen to have an attractive girlfriend, you have to know that dudes try to get at her all day everyday.

(NOTE: All men probably seem to think that their significant other is attractive. Unfortunately several men are sadly mistaken. For those of you guys out there you can relax, you have nothing to worry about here. Unless of course your girl is a hoe. I’m just playin…but I’m sayin)

The second situation that I happen to see a lot is when a person sees their boyfriend/girlfriend talking to somebody else that they don’t know and they immediately get jealous. If your girl/guy happens to be getting a little too flirtatious, it’s perfectly ok to let it be known that you plan on kick the shit out him/her as soon as you get home. But never, ever, under any circumstances try to check the other person. The first reason being that you don’t know them and they just might kick your ass. The second reason being, it’s not their fault that your significant other wants to talk to them. If you happen to go out and you see you girl/guy getting a little too close to someone else, then do the same thing with someone else but take it up a notch or two. See how much they like it on the other end and I guarantee you they’ll think twice about it the next time. You may even end up getting laid out of the whole ordeal. Not saying I condone that…but I’m sayin.

With that being said, the basic premise I’m trying to get to is that if you’re gonna be with somebody, you gotta learn to trust them. If you can’t do that, then you might as well break up now because you will never be happy with that person. If you do what you’re supposed to do you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. And if your boyfriend/girlfriend still ends up sneaking around, well then that just wasn’t the one for you. It’s not the end of the world. On to the next one. Yeah it may hurt you, but don’t get mad. Get even. Sleep with his/her closest friends as revenge. I’m just playin…but I’m sayin.

Thug Life???

“There is no such thing as a thug in college”

First of all, I gotta shout out to the homie V-Mac for coining the title of this blog post. We here at MyShoeBag are all college graduates. I know that’s hard to believe for some, but it’s true. That being said, we have always wondered why members of certain groups (ahem, middle to upper-class black guys) go out of their way to portray a “street” or “thug” persona while in college. Stop that shit….now. There’s no such thing as a thug in college. Seriously.

We don’t give a shit what hood you’re from (subdivision), how poor (middle-class) you were growing up, or what set (dance crew) you claim. You are in college. You go to BIO 1401 lab. You eat at a dining hall. You live in a dorm. I bet you even had to recite some shitty poem you wrote for a creative writing course, and you probably tried to rap it. Poorly.

But what’s even more intriguing is the fact that most “thugs” in college sure seem to come from pretty stable backgrounds complete with two-story homes, backyard pools, and loving parents; a stable upbringing in Suburbia, USA. However, some members of “certain groups” seem to feel the need to create a brand-new personality filled with Z-Ro, stunna shades, incorrect grammar, and a reeeaallllyy loud bark with no bite. But, when shit pops off, they are nowhere to be found. You didn’t even see what was going on, right? Damn, you had no idea they were talking to YOU, right?

Here’s the thing, all you wannabe d-boys. Real thugs would never be in college (except for Stringer Bell). Real thugs don’t give a shit about the future and only think from one day to the next. If crack still sells, guns still provide protection, and the weed is still sticky, thugs will stay in the ‘hood. If you have ever attended a floor meeting in a college dorm or some other pointless ass college activity, you care about your future. Thugs don’t have time for all that because that means they are ultimately wasting time; and we all know that time is money. The only thing a thug sees in college is 40,000 students, most of whom likely smoke weed. Granted, there probably are former thugs in college, but if they were lucky enough to escape their past, they sure as hell aren’t busy glorifying it.

Moral of the story: Be yourself. Be proud of your suburban background. Wear what you wore to high school and don’t all of a sudden find a drawl on steroids or a closet full of tall tees. Be proud of the boring ass upbringing you had. Some people would kill for that shit.

And one last reason why you shouldn’t play the thug role in college is because you will get your card pulled at some point. Trust me. We’ve seen it happen. It ain’t pretty. And plus, the College Republicans always need that one black guy anyway. Go for it.
